Resolution opposing the proposed

Recreation fees by the

United States Forest Service

 

 

WHEREAS, a major source of revenue in southern Illinois is the tourism industry; and

 

WHEREAS, in 2004, the director for the SouthernMost Illinois Tourism Bureau, notes that, “the extensive research conducted by Southern Illinois University clearly defines the profound economic impact that horse camping generates to our local economy in southernmost Illinois”; and

 

WHEREAS, equestrians, hikers, repellers, and hunters utilize the trails in the Shawnee National Forest; and

 

WHEREAS, designated trails are incomplete with partial markings and interim maps; and

 

WHEREAS, equestrian campers already pay a bridle tag tax; and

 

WHEREAS, under the new proposed system, senior citizen and disabled trail riders are NOT eligible for discount or free passes; and

 

WHEREAS, the proposed fee is higher than neighboring National Forests and Recreation Areas; and

 

WHEREAS, the Shawnee National Forest has seasonal closures from December to April and the neighboring National Forests do not;

 

 

 

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT:_________________________________________________

does not support the passage of the proposed Recreation Fees by the United States Forest Service.
